Hands on Help

When tragedies like the recent earthquake in Haiti happen, it leaves us all feeling powerless to help. But we all can help in meaningful and significant ways here at home. In response to the tremendous need for assistance in Haiti, The School for Contemplative Living has organized the assembly of health kits that are part of the Louisiana Conference collection effort. The health kits will be sent to Haiti as part of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) efforts in the country.

There are several ways that you can be of assistance:

1. Donate items for the UMCOR health kits that will be sent to Haiti (see list below)

2. Volunteer to help sort the donated supplies and assemble the health kits

3. Donate funds to the UMCOR Haiti Relief Fund

4. Pray daily for the people of Haiti and all the relief workers who are there to help ease the suffering.

Health Kits

We are collecting the following items for the assembly of the kits.

The specific items needed for the kits include:

· 1 hand towel (15" x 25" up to 17" x 27", No kitchen towels)

· 1 washcloth

· 1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)

· 1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)

· 1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)

· 1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, No child-size brushes)

· 6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages

· One-gallon plastic bags

(NOTE: UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) has advised that all items included in the kit must be NEW items and to please bring the requested items as described and nothing more. These kits have been carefully planned to maximize their use and it is important that are assembled and contain the specific items requested. Also, UMCOR is now purchasing toothpaste in bulk to be added to health kits before shipping to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent.)

Financial Donations

If you do not wish to purchase items for the health kits, a donation of $12 would cover the cost of one health kit.

If you would like to make an online contribution,click here. Every dollar you contribute will go directly to the relief effort. The School for Contemplative Living will also send the funds directly to the UMCOR account specifically designated for the Haitian Disaster if you would like to give through the school simply send your check made out to Parker United Methodist Church. Be sure to designate it to Haiti. Again, every dollar you contribute will go directly to the relief effort.

The United Methodist Church is organized to provide immediate response to disasters worldwide. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) is accepting donations to reimburse funds and supplies which are already on their way to assist those who have been devastated in Haiti.
