Listening in Stillness, Serving in Joy!

“On the virtues of being blind and deaf”

william e. thiele

Sometimes eyes and ears
grow weary.
Noisy opinions flood the Space
and crowd out the Presence
‘till I long for deafness
O Lord make it so.

And sights of the human ant pile
one crawling over the other
the over and under of whose way is right
and who deserves the most stuff
‘to the victor goes the spoils.’
Tragic sight
carried in the faces and the flesh
until the Way
becomes invisible altogether.
So I long for blindness
blind eyes to see the Invisible
O Lord make it so.

Let my eyes and ears shut for a while
and go internal
and wait
and rest

‘till the Quiet Voice
without words
has spoken –
blessed sound

and the imageless One
appears
before me

the only sight and sound
There Is.

blessed blindness
virtuous deafness
come.
